20 Nov One of a kind bulk water treatment in Butuan
The Butuan Water District in cooperation with the City Government of Butuan began operations of its new and one of a kind Bulk Water Treatment Plant along (name) River near Butuan City in March of 2017.
The Bulk Water Treatment Plant is designed by the Filipino Company Ecosystem Technologies International, Inc. a member of the Metro Pacific Investment Corp. and a direct subsidiary of Metro Pacific Water.
Ecosystem Technologies’ bulk water treatment is the first of its kind in the Philippines, in that it is designed to handle turbidity levels as high as 10,000 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTUs). This enables the Butuan Water District to provide uninterrupted water supply for all its service connections.
Most conventional technologies are not designed for tropical conditions, and treatment plants that use such suffer production inefficiencies once turbidity levels reach 300 NTUs, and experience down time at levels of 1,000 NTUs. This reduces the service levels to most connections and an overall lack of available water during heavy rains, which causes the spikes in turbidity.
In late 2014 to early 2015, Butuan City was beset with a water crisis. Perennial heavy rain was exacerbated by Typhoon Sendiong and caused high turbidity conditions for the bulk water treatment plants in the area.
In the early weeks of October 2017, Mindanao experienced heavy rainfall with recorded spikes in turbidity reaching as high as 6,500 NTUs. No water crisis befell Butuan City this time, as its new Bulk Treatment Plant experienced no loss of production.
“Filipino Technology in the service of Filipinos” is, according to Ecosystem President & CEO Robert Y. So, one of the guiding principles of the organizations advocacy of providing environmentally sustainable solutions to preserve the beneficial Earth conditions for future generations.
